Fridge. Artwork by Michelle Hammenfeldt.

Michelle was born and raised in Solna, Sweden. At the moment, she is living and working in Stockholm as an art director for a Swedish magazine that is mainly focused on pop culture. In 2009 she graduated from Konstfack at the department of Graphic Design and Illustration. For her final project she made a book about an apartment she rented in San Francisco by whom a woman she never met. The book “Laurie Wilson’s Neverland” includes drawings and writings of the owners collected things like body lotions and romantic comedies. Michelle’s drawings are sensitive, subtle but playful, detailed and naïve. “I guess I knew pretty early what I wanted to do. I wanted to write and I wanted to make my own books. When I was younger I could sit for hours with Microsoft Word and compose my own magazines with news I thought was interesting, mostly about animals (especially cats). And later made people submit to it”.

How did your work evolve since you graduated from Konstfack?

I was really tired of working alone just for myself with myself. So the first thing that changed after Konstfack was my interest in working with other people. I love to collaborate, when we as a group share a goal with different responsibilities to make it happen. I also learned a lot more about my work and myself by working with others. After Konstfack I let my pen rest for a little bit and started to work more with graphic design which has always been interesting to me, though my main focus in school was illustration. My work usually contains some graphic design, but I wanted to work more with putting other peoples work together rather than my own. Right now I am focusing on getting back to working on my own projects.
